Following the ambition of Mars Inc to achieve net-zero in its entire business and supply chain by 2050, Mars Petcare is significantly stepping-up its sustainability commitments, execution and visibility with an ambitious Climate Action Strategy and bold sustainability initiatives under the umbrella of the Sustainable in a Generation Plan. The global Climate Project Manager role is created to support the newly formed Pet Nutrition Sustainability organization and is critical for the successful delivery of Mars climate commitments.

The global Climate Project Manager will be responsible for activity management of the regional carbon reduction plans and other environmental and social improvements in line with the global sustainability commitments. Being an expert in climate, LCA and environmental studies, the Climate Project Manager will be managing existing pipeline of climate activities, as well as supporting the regions in identifying new projects, and highlighting overlaps or shared opportunities between the regions. The global Climate Project Manager will also be providing relevant upskilling on climate topics to the local teams, partnering closely with the Petcare Climate Data Manager and Corporate Climate Team and ensuring shared approach to climate accounting guidelines.

What are we looking for?

  • A Master’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture, Agroecology, Environmental Sciences, Forest and Nature Conservation, Development Economics or similar.
  • A minimum of 7 years working in the climate and sustainability field and proven track record in designing and delivering strategic climate action initiatives in the area of sustainable and regenerative agriculture or forestry, environmental resource management, climate change mitigation.
  • Excellent command of climate change issues and relevant policies, financing and technology solutions, ability to interpret complex environmental data and trends, including scope 1/2/3 carbon accounting, Life Cycle Assessment, various sustainability standards and reporting frameworks (CDP, CDSB, GHG Accounting, IMP, SDGs, SASB, IIRC, IFC, etc). Experience working with climate data, reporting and auditing with specific experience in digital platforms.
  • Excellent project management, program management and communication skills, ability to thrive in a diverse, rapidly changing and constantly evolving environment.
  • Ability to articulate complex topics in a clear way, as well as to present, explain and discuss them within all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent English written and communication skills.
  • Passion about sustainability and the value it can bring to the planet, people and pets.

What will be your key responsibilities?

Activity management of Petcare carbon projects pipeline:

  • Global ownership of the existing pipeline of carbon reduction activities (bottom-up plans 2023-2025 established by the regions): establish and manage the process of CAP (carbon action plans) renewals, progress tracking and budgeting, ensuring successful execution of the plans, or escalation if needed.
  • Own and drive implementation and scale-up of Supplier LoCT initiative on behalf of Global Petcare.

Climate data and reporting:

  • Work in close collaboration with the Climate Data Manager to ensure transparency and quality of the carbon data, including revision of historical Scope 1,2,3 data and modelling of required reductions and offsets until 2050.
  • In close partnership with the regional Climate & Sourcing Leads identify and start using the best digital tools and solutions to gather more accurate and specific carbon data from Petcare suppliers and farmers.
  • Collaborate with the colleagues working on Water, Deforestation and Regenerative Agriculture programs to ensure full integration of carbon lens into the programs on the ground, visibility on potential shared opportunities and avoidance of double counting.
  • Provide regular reporting and modelling on the actual carbon footprint of Petcare and anticipated progress at all levels of Petcare and externally.

Carbon accounting and functional expertise

  • In close collaboration with the Corporate Team develop clear guidelines on carbon accounting methodology and methods to calculate carbon footprint/estimated reductions across different pillars (Recipe Optimization, Packaging, Logistics, Regenerative Agriculture, etc).
  • Working in close collaboration with the Climate Data Manager and the Corporate Team support the development of Petcare approach to supplier-specific impact factors and ensure its centralized tracking and smooth integration into the overall sustainability metrics set.
  • Support the revision of the carbon-related tools, systems and modules offered by the current service providers or used on the extended market and brings those, requiring deeper exploration, to the attention of the broader Petcare Climate Team and Corporate Team.

Climate advocacy, trainings and storytelling

  • Serve as a key functional expert and climate leader in Petcare, providing support, guidance and coaching to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Engage with colleagues on the central and segment teams to ensure consistent approach, aligned messaging, issue resolution and progress toward agreed goals.
  • Develop strong working relationships with key industry players in climate, including NGOs, consultancies, industry peers, become an active member of external fora on climate topic, representing Petcare.
